General Travel Information


Any foreign visitors wanting to visit China must have a valid passport and obtain a Chinese visa before arrival. Please note that visitors from Singapore, Japan and Brunei do not need a visa to China for a stay of up to 15 days.

As an attendee at the WMTC Asia-Pacific 2015, you will need a type F Business Visa. This type of visa is issued to foreigners who are invited to China for a business visit, research, a lecture, scientific-technological & cultural exchanges, short-term furthering studies or intern practice less than six months. Make sure to have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months past your entry date.


China’s unit of currency is the Renminbi (RMB). The yuan (sign: ¥) is the basic unit of the renminbi, but is also used to refer to the Chinese currency generally, especially in international contexts. As of 2014, China’s currency includes banknotes for ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50 and ¥100. In June 2015, one U.S. dollar was equivalent to 6.20 yuan.


The standard voltage in China is 220 volts. Outlets have two or three slots.


Standard Chinese (known in China as Putonghua), a form of the Mandarin dialect, is the official national spoken language for the mainland. However, there are many other dialects used throughout the country, especially in rural areas. Traditional Chinese characters are used for writing (verses simplified Chinese characters used in Taiwan).

Mobile reception and coverage is quite good in Guilin. And while there are very few telephone booths remaining, convenience stands or stores still offer public phone service. You can easily purchase sim cards at China Mobile(most popular), China Union or China Telecom.

International Calls

When calling to Guilin from abroad, first dial the China country code +86, then area code 773 (except for the first number 0), finally dial the phone number you need to call.

For example: if you are calling Guilin phone 0773-1234567. Dial +773-1234567.

When calling from Guilin to an international number, first dial the country code, then area code(except for the first number 0), finally dial the phone number you need to call.

For example: calling USA phone (0703)1234567. Dial +0017031234567.


Internet cafes can be found everywhere. Most cafes open 24/7, cost is approximately 2RMB/hour.

Generally, tipping is not a common practice in China. However, tour guides and drivers will expect to be tipped by foreigners as this forms the bulk of their income. There is no established amount so tip at your digression.
